2011 – Rock & Roll – 12-24-11 – ROCKY’S ROAD
Special Report for Rock and Roll Diary
12/24/11: We managed to find Rock and Roll’s previous owners from their brands. They were owned by the Hunt Limousine Cattle Ranch in Elizabeth, Colorado. They told us they Bought Rock and Roll from an Amish family in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and used them to pull the hay wagon they used to feed their cattle. Then a little over 10 years ago, they were sold to a buyer here in Colorado that they could not remember the name. They said both mules weighed 2500 pounds and were healthy when they left. When I saw Rock and Roll for the first time in January 2010, they were at the National Western Stock show with my friends Fran and Larry Howe. They were driving them and both mules were severely under weight. Rock had just had two abscessed teeth pulled, but they made not mention of lameness at that time. They told name he had come up lame when I saw them at the Larimer County Fair in August where they had only brought Roll. Dave McClain told me he advised them not to drive the mules and that Rock had a fracture early on when they bought them. So, how Rock fractured his pelvis is still a mystery and doesn’t really matter at this point.
Rock is having a really rough time so far this winter with the hard, slippery ground. His hips just don’t support his weight very well. We are doping what we can, but after falling down in the snow bank yesterday, we felt Rock really needed his turnout in the indoor arena and not outside. It was a challenge getting him to the arena from his stall and run. Steve solved the problem and built Rocky’s Road!
