Day 4: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Ashley, Wynonna, Merle, and Riley came to AAE in February 2020 after their elderly owner was struggling physically to give them the care they needed. They were truly loved, but sometimes love isn’t enough.

ASHLEY & WYNONNA

Shortly after they arrived, Ashley & Wynonna had a horsey spa day: hooves were trimmed, dental float and deworming were done, vaccines were updated, and microchips were placed.

This sweet duo are best friends with opposite personalities. Wynonna is confident and pushy while Ashley is shy and curious.

Ashley & Wynonna were adopted together in June!

RILEY & MERLE

The boys were on a diet of cob, rolled oats, and vegetable oil, along with a little bit of grass hay. They lived in side by side 12’x12′ stalls in a garage. Due to their owner’s mobility issues, they hadn’t been out for a long time.

When Riley arrived at AAE he had many health issues and had not been eating well. This sweet mid-teen gelding had Cushings as well as hoof and dental issues. The bottoms of his hooves were “soggy” and tender from standing in piled up manure in his stall and he suffered from laminitis. Riley’s lower wolf teeth were extremely overgrown and were penetrating his upper jaw.

Riley was a sweet little guy. He enjoyed attention and had a cute and sassy personality. Initially, he seemed to enjoy the freedom of AAE with his buddy Merle. Sadly, he was struggling more than we initially understood. His hooves were trimmed and his teeth were floated. It seemed the laminitis and jaw penetrating teeth were more than enough to cause discomfort, and he couldn’t process food. He slowly lost weight, and blood work indicated he was in kidney and liver failure. Unfortunately, he had a very poor prognosis. We did the kindest thing we could do; we helped him across the Rainbow Bridge. Oh how we wish all rescue stories had happy endings.

 

MERLE

When he arrived at AAE, Merle needed hoof and dental care, surgery to be gelded, and a change in his diet. He was shy and nervous around humans so we waited until he was a little more comfortable before scheduling surgery. He healed without any issues, which was a relief considering his age.

Merle is an older guy with arthritis, including a bone spur in his left shoulder and a hitch in his right hind. He takes daily medication to help. Despite his aging body, this little guy still gets around (albeit slowly) and seems to be happy.

He is still slightly shy around people, but Merle loves to watch the barn activity from a distance and when people visit his paddock for a chat. He is currently living with resident mini Dusty and the two get along well.

Merle is available for adoption. He is up to date with hoof and dental care, vaccines, and deworming, and has a microchip, too. The perfect home for him would be one with another senior mini gelding, no other mini/animals who might chase him or dominate him. He should also have a home where he wouldn’t need to move long distances.

Today’s story is about a sweet boy who joined us shortly after the new year.

CODY

Cody is a 1999 Arabian gelding who came to AAE in January 2020 after long-term health issues with his owner and the passing of his caretaker. When Cody arrived, he was very underweight and in need of dental care. He was unable to process hay, so we started him on a pellet diet and refeeding consistent with the University of California Davis’s program for refeeding emaciated horses.

Cody regained weight well and also received dental and hoof care, vaccines, dewormer, and a new microchip. It didn’t take long before he was both looking and feeling better! Cody simply needed food he could process, and enough of it. No doubt, dental work helped, as well.

Cody’s life prior to coming to AAE isn’t quite clear. We were initially told he had been a racehorse in his youth, but due to an injury, he became a pasture pet who was never trained. We were later told he never raced because he wasn’t fast enough for the track. So, we took it slow to see what he knew.

Under saddle, we were pleasantly surprised to find he had more experience than a former race horse that hadn’t been ridden since he injured himself on the track. He was ridden lightly a handful of times in the arena at a walk, trot, and canter, and he was quiet and easy.

Cody is a sweetheart who loves people, grooming, and attention. This boy was ready to go!! It’s not too surprising that within a few months of his arrival, he found his forever person.

Cody was adopted in June as a light riding horse and companion to his mom and two other horses. After his adoption, we learned from family that Cody had substantial training and experience under saddle.

Before and After Photos are always fun…

Take note, if ever you hear a horse is thin/emaciated because it’s old, think Cody. Often they are either not getting food they can process, or they’re not getting enough. Lack of dental maintenance is often a contributing cause, as well. Not always, but often.

#GivingTuesday is one global day dedicated to giving, volunteerism, and kindness in our communities! Whether you give your time, voice, or donations, we hope you can help make a difference in the lives of our horses TODAY.

To kick off December and #GivingTuessday, here is our first story about our first intakes of 2020 – Alaina, Cassadee, and Frankie!

When Alaina, a 20-ish senior mustang mare arrived, her hooves were extremely long, her teeth were in dire need of care, and she was mildly lame in her front hooves. Alaina’s hooves were trimmed, dental care provided, vaccines were updated, deworming was done, and she got a microchip. Radiographs revealed that she had extensive ringbone in her front pastern joints. She was started on a daily med to help with arthritis and ringbone. Fortunately, it helped tremendously, and Alaina was much more comfortable.

Alaina is a very sweet, mild-mannered mare. She is social and willing, and enjoyed the attention of our volunteers. It wasn’t too long before Alaina found her forever home as a companion to another mare that had just lost her long time friend! The two made an instant connection, and her new mom couldn’t be happier.

 

Cassadee is a 19-ish senior paint (yup) mare. Like Alaina, her basic care had been deferred, but fortunately, she wasn’t as impacted as Alaina. Cassadee’s hooves were trimmed, dental care provided, vaccines were updated, deworming was done, and she got a microchip. Cassadee is Frankie’s mom.

Cassadee is also a very mild-mannered, sweet-sweet mare. She’s calm, quiet, social, and very easy to handle. She gets along well with the herd and is simply an uncomplicated mare. Cass buddied up with our old guy, Amigo, and earned a job with our orientation team. She will remain at AAE as a resident program horse to help with our New Volunteer Orientation, and she’s a great teacher for new volunteers. Her quiet and willing personality make her a trustworthy partner teaching new volunteers about basic handling, grooming, and interacting with horses.

 

Frankie is a 13 year old paint (yup) mare. She’s Cassadee’s girl. Similarly, her basic care had been deferred. Frankie was lame when she arrived. Frankie’s hooves were trimmed, dental care provided, vaccines were updated, deworming was done, and she got a microchip. Radiographs showed arthritic changes around an old extensor process fracture in her right front and mild navicular changes. Corrective shoeing didn’t seem to help much. Other supportive efforts (e.g. joint injections, Legend, OsPhos) haven’t improved much either.

Frankie is a really nice, super mellow and sweet mare. She also loves attention and being in the presence of people. She’s quiet in hand, she’s good with her hooves and farrier, and she loads fine. Her biggest issue is, when it’s meal time and other horses are around, she is protective of her food (even when not threatened).

Frankie is available for adoption. She is looking for a companion only/non-riding home with at least one other horse. She could be a very nice option as a lead-line horse for smaller (light) children. If Frankie sounds like she could be your perfect equine friend, learn more about our adoption process here.

A Very Thankful Giving Tuesday

As many of our newsletter supporters know, last year was very challenging for SYA and all involved. We went through a major farm pandemic, whereas this year we are navigating through a worldwide pandemic. There is no way we would have been able to get through last year without all of our caring supporters to help us, financially and with your kind encouragement.
So to those of you who are reading, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us to continue to save donkeys and mules in need. We could not do it without you.

Some of you may remember Walton and Hobie, who we rescued just a year ago this month. They could not have landed in a better home. These guys have gotten the happy ending they so deserved.

Thanksgiving

Oh, hi! My name is Hobie, and I’m living in a dream!
My BFF is Walton, we are such a happy team.
But it was just a year ago we knew that we would die
Without some help from folks like you, and let me tell you why.
I wasn’t always happy! I was used for basketball.
My bones and knees still show the scars of many slips and falls.
Walton was a fine show-horse, somebody’s pampered boy
Until the day they let him go, discarded like a toy.
We landed in a killer’s lot, lost, shivering, and scared.
We were starving, cold, and wounded, and it seemed nobody cared.
The other horses on the lot were fighting for their lives.
Their circumstances were as bad as those we have described.
They kicked and bit and drove us off so we could never eat.
My gentle friend could not defend us from their teeth and feet.
Our coats were thin, our teeth were bad, our ribs were caving in.
We thought that we would never have a loving home again.
A kind man found us just in time and took us from that hell.
He kept us safe until he found a place that suited well.
Hannah came and fetched us, and we really made her cry;
And then Ann and Hannah fed us and they made us warm and dry.
They fixed our teeth and trimmed our feet and made us whole again.
And then they found our great new home! And here we will remain
To roam a big green pasture with soft beds and piles of hay,
And eat warm mush and many treats, and petting all the day.
So if you wonder if it counts that you support our cause,
remember what you’ve done to save many lives like ours.
Thanksgiving is the day that we say thanks to SYA
Because without your help, we would not be alive today!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING – A TOTAL OF 29 HORSES FOR THIS CURRENT TRIP!

UPDATE ON THE FAB 5 LOL

I am closing this rescue trip with the beautiful LADY LOVE. She is a slaughter intercept, and is blind in one eye. Her eye is a hot mess, and very painful. Doc checked it and said most likely I will have to have it removed when I get home. She already has a potential adopter, and is very sweet.

I was about to head home. Y’all had saved 18, 14 were adopted, and I had the perfect trailer load home. 2 adults and 6 babies. Suddenly, 2 days later, I have 19 to take home.

This turned into a 29 horse rescue. I need to get home, but am waiting on another trailer and the new paperwork for the latest group.

Thank you to everyone who has donated. I realize that funds are really tight, and I so appreciate any and all donations.

We still have quite a ways to go to finish paying the hay bill, cover the last vet bill which was over $1000+ for the first 18 Coggins, and now we just did another 11 blood draws.

I know God has this and that is why I keep on plugging away, even when it seems like it is just too much, especially being here by myself. I also want to THANK EVERYONE for the love and support. I could not do this without y’all.

More thanks to all the ladies (and Danny Dustin lol) who continue to step up and help find homes and keep me grounded.

I am so thankful for all of it. Please stay safe. help if you can, say a prayer and have a wonderful holiday!

911 ANOTHER CALL FROM THE SHIPPER – 5 MORE BABIES SITTING ON THE SCALE RIGHT NOW – WILL YOU SAVE THEM??

ANOTHER 911 – URGENT CALL FROM THE SHIPPER! – There are currently FIVE MORE (5) orphans sitting on the scales at the shippers. I acted on FAITH and made an appointment for vetting tomorrow.

However, I have already had to turn down different groups due to dwindling finances. Before I can say YES to saving these 5 (and probably more), I have to know that we can afford to safely save them.

The last group I had to turn down is being shared on our pages. Luckily some of them are finding homes. However, I CANNOT commit if I cannot take care of them.

Many of these colts are “shipping size”. Most likely they would be trampled in the trailer by the big horses, but if not, they will be be slaughtered.

LET’S SAVE THE “FAB FIVE”. THESE BABIES NEED YOUR HELP ASAP! THE CLOCK IS RUNNING OUT QUICKLY!

I am also standing by for horses from another catcher..

PLEASE help save these precious lives. Out of the last 18, 14 have already been adopted and are simply waiting for their paperwork to get here so they can go home.

We need to save this last group. I need to get back to NV, but am willing to stay long enough to get these last ones vetted and ready to go.

The clock is ticking! PLEASE SAVE THEM!

Sadly, we are still a long ways off from having enough funds to pay for the hay. Please remember that part of saving them is feeding them until they can be adopted.

Ralphie Says Hi!

Thanks to you, Ralphie is doing well!

Ralphie is a handsome 17-year old American Cream Draft who came to AAE last month. Shortly after his arrival, he had surgery to remove a growth in his right eye and a mass on his hind left pastern. Thanks to our wonderful AAE community, we were able to raise funds to help with his surgery and biopsy costs!

The surgery went well, and Ralphie returned to AAE a few days later. His neighbors were welcoming, and he settled in nicely. Unfortunately, Ralphie soon developed significant drainage from his eye, and he had to return to the clinic. A few sutures were removed for cleaning and drainage, leaving about a quarter size opening into Ralphie’s orbit. The orbit would need to be flushed and cleaned for the next several days until the tissue was healthier. As it healed, the orbit area filled with granulation tissue and after a week or so, he was able to return to AAE.

 

While Ralphie was at the clinic, we received some good news – the biopsy of the eye tissue showed clean margins, and the leg tissue was not a sarcoid and not cancerous!

Ralphie has been back at AAE for about 10 days. His eye is nearly healed, and is leg is healing, slowly. He’s happy to be home and we’re happy he’s here!

ANOTHER 911 EMERGENCY CALL FOR 19 BABIES? CAN WE SAVE THEM? THE CLOCK IS TICKING – 12 HOURS UNTIL PICKUP

Yet another 911 for 9 babies tomorrow and 10?, possible more on Thursday.

I literally have tears in my eyes as I type this. But God says He will never give us more than we can handle. (I feel like I am getting close though.)

I WAS TOLD TO EXPECT 19 more babies – MINIMUM, and we all know there are usually always more when I get there………

It is almost too much to bear. Honestly I am exhausted, and I need to get ready for winter at the rescue.

I wasn’t even home 24 hours before I got the call.

The fact is though, with YOUR HELP, we CAN save them, so it makes it really, really, hard to just “stay home” because I am exhausted and funds are too low.

There are 9 more babies at the shipper’s RIGHT NOW! I have to say yes and have less than 24 hours to take delivery of the first 9.

These babies simply have NO WHERE ELSE TO GO! No bullets, no knives. We need to save them. Driving back to WA and doing this rescue is honestly the LAST thing I want to do right now. I have only been home for a minute.

However, I know they were put in front of us because we CAN save them with your help. As some of you may have seen my fundraiser for the hay delivery, I am sure you are aware how tight funds are. But I have FAITH, and I HAVE FAITH that someone out there wants these babies saved!.

So I am asking on behalf of these babies for folks to come together once again and donate anything you can. I do NOT want to say yes to the first group, and not save the next group. Sadly, chances are that there will be more by the time I get there. Food is scarce and the horses are down low, which is making them easy to trap.

It has been an amazingly successful year of saved horses heading to new homes. So many people have worked so hard. Let’s give these babies something to celebrate on Thanksgiving. Let’s give them LIFE!

Now that I am finally home, I am behind on chores, and the NUMBER 1 NEED is to fill the barn with hay, and get the horses settled and cared for. I have approximately 30? horses and babies at Chilly Pepper and one more trailer will be here Saturday.

Some of these are already adopted and just waiting for transport to get to their new homes, and others are waiting for their permanent homes.

Sadly, when I finally drove in, I could see we are in desperate need of hay. Due to the fires, there is already beginning to be a shortage of hay, so I am looking to buy a semi load. I am also looking at gelding horses and have many needing their hoofers trimmed.

I am beyond exhausted, but ever so grateful YOU stepped up and helped me save all those lives. So many women are coming together to help find homes and make these saves “successful”. I am so grateful to God. So once again I am going on Faith. How can I not when He helped us save these last two groups AND most of them are in loving homes. So once again, I am asking anyone who is so inclined, to help make sure these horses have feed all winter. We do have quite a few special needs, “permanent residents”, and they also think they should eat and get their expensive medicine each and every day.

Thank you for the love and support. I have been doing this alone for quite awhile now, which makes it a bit harder, but I have noticed that God always has me. So many people make this happen!!

THE CALLS WON’T QUIT!

2 MORE VERY WILD, PREGNANT MARES WITH WEANLINGS ON THEIR SIDE!

I HAVE TO GIVE AN ANSWER RIGHT AWAY! These mares AND THEIR BABIES NEED YOU NOW!

We have nearly enough funds to get the ones you just saved, vetted and to start heading home. However, I cannot bear the thought of the mares and weanlings loading onto a slaughter truck, especially as they are well into their pregnancies. Let’s add them to the mix and save their lives! WILL YOU HELP SAVE THE MAMA’S TOO? THEY NEED BAIL, FUNDS FOR VETTING AND TRANSPORT, AND THEY PROBABLY WANT TO BE FED AND CARED FOR AS WELL!

I need more funds to responsibly save them!

I was able to get all the babies/weanlings ( ended up with 11). However, once again there was a special “REASON” I COULDN’T LEAVE.

Below is “REASON’s” story. She is the sad mare at the top of the page. Her neck is permanently scarred from being roped and she is so terrified of being hurt. She is halter trained and stands calmly, although she is sure you will smack her if you get close to her head. She is the most odd looking little girl at this point, but with proper food and exercise who knows what she will end up looking like. Regardless, she deserves a safe place to land.

Her story is below if you enjoy reading.

As we drove into the lot to pick up the babies, I noticed another truck and trailer pulling in. My stomach dropped as I looked into the eyes of a very scared young(?) horse. I am the last one allowed to save babies out of this yard, and it is because I am professional and keep my mouth shut. Although my heart was breaking and my stomach churning even more than usual, we loaded up the babies and headed out. As we were leaving, they unloaded “REASON”. She was very quiet as she was led to the next step on the journey towards her death. Her eyes were white with terror and she was trembling from head to toe.

The closer we got to camp, the more I couldn’t breathe. Her face and eyes stayed with me and as I started to cry I made the call. She may never be ridable, but she did not deserve the horrible end she was headed to. Her face already had bites from the other horses and she was a sad mess when we got to her. She has permanent roping scars on her neck and has every expectation that she is going to be hurt when you walk up. She is the sweetest thing I have ever seen and her little heart and soul are broken. But there is a light deep in the back of her eyes. I have to think she was one of the main “REASON’s” I could not go home. If we had not pulled in at that exact moment in time, her fate would have been very different.

Sometimes God makes me wait to see “why”, and other times he makes it so clear.

We also had Baby Boo, who only has 2 little, teeth top and bottom. She is going to a wonderful lady we work with. She, along with her vet, will give the mare 2 shots and Boo will have a real mommy. The other babies are just as precious.

YOUR MONEY ALWAYS GOES RIGHT WHERE IT SHOULD! THANK YOU FOR SAVING ALL OF THESE PRECIOUS LIVES!

I DO NEED MORE HELP if I am going to be able to afford the 2 pregnant mares and their babies. THANK YOU FROM ALL OF THEM!!!

ABSOLUTE 911 – URGENT PLEA FOR HELP! SHIPPER CALLED AND THERE ARE 12 MORE BABIES — DO I SAVE THEM OR LET THEM DIE?

911 FOR 12 OR MORE BABIES?!! (These are babies you saved prior, so imagine it was them – we have to save them.)

I WAS LITERALLY LOADED AND HEADING HOME WHEN I GOT THE 911!

CLOCK IS LITERALLY TICKING! I HAVE ONLY HOURS TO COMMIT!

Shipper called – ANOTHER DOZEN or so babies I have hours to commit to.

ALL of the last 18 from this current rescue are safe and adopted. PTL! I
ABSOLUTELY DID NOT WANT TO TURN AROUND. I literally have tears sneaking out of my eyes. I need to get back home. However, I know that God wanted me to save these, or I would have gotten the call an hour or more into the trip. The fact that I got it just as we were leaving makes it pretty clear that I am meant to save these!

The coffers are nearly empty, I still have 9 babies at home, along with the other 20 or so horses at the rescue, and I NEED YOUR HELP NOW IF I AM GOING TO BE ABLE TO SAVE THESE LAST PRECIOUS LIVES.

It’s simple, I literally cannot afford to save these babies without your help! I need funds to pay for Ranch Care, Bail for the Babies, Vetting and hauling to get them safely home. I need to buy winter hay and the list goes on. I have to be responsible, and I am having faith in y’all because I know this is God’s plan, and I know you don’t want these babies to die. I do have to be careful and make sure I can properly take care of every horse we save!

Meet Ralphie!

Ralphie is scheduled for surgery TODAY!

Please help us help him

Ralphie is a handsome 17-year old American Cream Draft who recently came to AAE. He has some issues that need surgery to help improve his quality of life. Earlier this year, he developed a little mass on his lower right eyelid that continued to grow. He also has a lemon-sized mass on his left medial pastern. His family tried conservative treatment of the areas; they weren’t successful. They weren’t equipped for further treatment, especially with winter coming.

The eye growth is likely a squamous cell carcinoma. It has grown and ulcerated. It’s painful, it oozes and drains down his cheek, it stinks to holy *#@#, and it’s a mecca for flies. It needs to be cleaned at least twice a day, and he wears a fly mask all the time. Fly spray helps, but flies still swarm around the smell and drainage that leaks through the mask. Nuisance, irritant…unbearable. The only way to help is to remove the mass.

Sadly, it’s gotten so large, much of his eyelid is affected, and he’ll also need his eye removed. It’s also possible it’s affected the surrounding bone. There’s no easy way to know how much impact before removing it, but it will only continue to grow, if not removed.

The mass on his pastern is likely either granulation tissue (proud flesh) or a sarcoid. When he walks, he clips the area with his other hoof and irritates the area or reopens the wound preventing healing. We’ve kept it wrapped and use bell boots to minimize the contact, but it’s large and still interferes with his steps.

During intake exam, we also identified a small, suspect lesion on his sheath. While sedated, this spot will be removed, too.

Costs for surgery are beyond our typical intake budget, and we’re asking our horse-loving community to come together to support Ralphie. If everyone can help a little, it will make a big difference for him. We also have a very generous donor who offered to match funds to make sure we meet our $3500 goal to help with surgery and biopsy costs. Any excess will be used to help with additional hospitalization, medications, post-op care, and follow-ups or other veterinary needs.

We realize some of you may think because of the costs, that euthanasia is the better choice. If you feel that way, you are under no obligation to donate. Ralphie’s fundraiser is for all of you that believe every life counts. Let’s give him a chance!

ANOTHER CALL FROM THE SHIPPER AND THE CATCHERS!

16 MORE BABIES AND A RARE CHANCE TO SAVE 3 PREGNANT MARES! (We are still in the middle of rescuing the 27, and I NEED MORE HELP TO SAVE ALL OF THESE LIVES!

Thankfully we have had some wonderful adoptions and I am down to 6 babies with me now, as well as the 9 babies in Golconda with the rest of the kids. Both Strawberry and the abused TB are safe and sound in their new homes. PTL!

We have had some significant injuries in the last group, and the vet bills take a huge chunk of the donations. One of the HIDDEN COSTS of rescue are Brand Inspections. I spent over $660 in the last few weeks for a simple piece of paper that is required for every horse. But most people have no idea that we spend so much money on these. Legally it is required, and it hurts badly as it eats into the budget.

As you can see in the photo, this mare was desperate to escape. They are terrified and cannot understand why they are suddenly trapped. (Not to mention what they have been through during the roundups.)

It is supposed to be the end of the catching season. Today, I was sent pictures of these mares. PLEASE DO NOT LET THEIR FACES HAUNT ME FOREVER!

I truly need a break, but these lives were put in front of me for a reason. Obviously it is God’s plan for us to try and save them. I cannot do it without you. Please make this happen! The clock is ticking…..

I NEED YOUR HELP TO SAVE THESE PRECIOUS LIVES! The mares are very thin and very pregnant. I cannot stand the thought of them on the slaughter truck. I know it is easy to run on “faith” when things are a bit difficult, but it is even more important to trust in the really hard times, or it doesn’t mean anything.

So I am trusting we can raise the funds we need to purchase all 19 OF THE NEW GROUP OF horses AND to get them vetted, hauled home to safety and fed and cared for until they have found their forever homes. I HAVE TO RAISE ENOUGH FUNDS TO RESPONSIBLY RESCUE THESE lives. They all need to be fed and cared for after they are saved.

This mare is extremely thin, and very pregnant. Let’s get her to safety so she can get her groceries and have her baby in peace, not have it ripped out and thrown onto the slaughter floor. She needs your help now!

STILL MORE BABIES NEED YOUR HELP!! This rescue is at 27 so far, and still growing. Catchers are running like crazy before the bad weather hits. Do I tell them, YES or No? It’s up to you!

THE NUMBERS RIGHT NOW ARE AT 27 – 23 BABIES, 1 Pregnant wild mare, the other abused wild TB mare, and still working on the pony. 5 of those are still at the Shipper’s, which pretty much guarantees by the time they are “ready to go”, there will be more. So far, there has NEVER been a pickup that didn’t have more babies.

I appreciate every penny that has been donated. Sadly, if I am going to be able to save ALL these precious lives, the horses simply need more help. It is kind of terrifying to think about so many mouths to feed etc. However, our wonderful adoption coordinator has found homes for 6 of the babies and I have both mares adopted out as well. I still have 9 babies in Golconda, and winter is coming.

I am willing do the work, but I need your help for the funding.

I want to send out a big thank you to Matt. He came up from Texas to fix my water lines and decided to come and help me on this rescue before heading to CA. He has been a big blessing and it was nice to not be here on my own this time.

For the folks who feel like reading, I wanted to share a day in the life of a rescue with y’all. It is pretty much the reality of what it is like to do this work.

This morning I woke up, ran to town for supplies, spent a couple hours with an amazing adopter, picked up more orphaned foals, fed, watered and vetted the ones with injuries and finally sat down. As I write this, the reality sets in.

I have a beautiful camp site where I have my “temporary corrals” set up.
My veggies are simmering in butter over the fire, and it is so beautiful out. The air is soft and clear, and as the music plays, my heart swells thinking of how beautiful everything is. I try to enjoy as much as I can each, and every day and appreciate what is in front of me.

Reality is the knife that comes deep in my heart. The beauty tonight is pierced by the horrors that brought me here. Although I have made this the absolute best “home away from home” I possibly can, the night is pierced by the screams of babies torn away from their Mamas and their families. Their anguished, wailing cries, hanging heads and beat up bodies show the horrors of what just happened. The absolutely, bewildered look in the eyes of these broken babies rips out your heart. At this very moment, their moms, brothers, sisters, and dads are crushed in a slaughter truck, able to make no sense of what happened. Days ago, they were running free, and tonight they are kicked and bitten as too many of them are crammed together in the truck of death.

I am so grateful to have a place to set up and take care of these broken souls, and as most of you know I spend weeks living in “camp” in my horse trailer so I can save these babies, pregnant mares, old stallions and anyone else God throws into the mix. But listening to these babies scream for their mama’s all night long, is ripping my heart out. As the tears stream down my face, the pain is so physical it nearly makes me ill.

This was NOT my dream, to be buried in the sewer that is the slaughter world. But God puts it in front of me, so this IS my world. It isn’t bad enough that only yesterday as I drove here, I was up to 16 weanlings, not including the pregnant mare, the other crazed, injured and abused wild mare, and the bratty pony. TODAY, I picked up 6 instead of 4, and there are ANOTHER 5 at the Shipper’s. So today’s number is 23, NOT 16, and that is just the babies. Every day it seems to grow……

When I think about trying to explain the need for help, it is simply overwhelming. I so say “no” all the time, but when I am the only thing standing between death and these babies, I have to give it my all. Honestly, I am beyond tired. I want to cry I am so tired. Emotionally, physically I am exhausted. But I cannot have that negative energy with these babies. They need to feel safe and like they are loved. So I sit here wondering how much more I can take. I know God won’t give us more than we can handle, but sometimes I wonder how tough He thinks I really am.

_This is my evening. Trying to make the best of the situation put in front of me.

Wondering how soon everyone would quit reading the sad news that I spout as I try to save these precious lives. So many 911’s and emergencies. THIS IS MY LIFE ON THE FRONT LINE!_

Listening to the heartbreaking screams of the babies. Knowing their families are rattling around in a slaughter bound trailer, terrified, and missing their babies. Yet I have to struggle on, because if I quit, all of these lives will be lost, and not in a humane fashion.

Once again saving ALL of these souls depends on you, my Chilly Pepper Family. YOU are the Angels that make it happen. The chance of it only being 27 is nearly impossible, but one can hope.

STRAWBERRY, the pregnant roan mare has been saved, along with 8 of the babies. THANK YOU to each and every one of you who helped save them!

THERE ARE STILL 4 MORE BABIES PLUS THE 2 that I JUST GOT CALLED ON (while I was typing this). I need to commit to the babies, and we now have this sad little pony and the injured mare on the “URGENT – CLOCK HAS RUN OUT” list.

WILL YOU HELP SAVE THE REST OF THEM?

I am hoping and praying this is NOT the time I have to leave horses behind.

I know I cannot save the world, and I say “no” constantly, but this rescue is drawing out and I need to know if we can come up with enough funds to save ALL OF THEM!

This poor mare has been given a bum rap. She was mishandled, horribly abused and now is simply terrified if too much pressure is put on her.

Her baby was just stripped away and now she is being thrown away. She was also injured. She does not deserve to die!

So many times people only want the baby, and somehow there is an excuse to throw away Mama.

Let’s show her that HER LIFE MATTERS!

IT’S GO TIME! – 911 FOR PREGNANT MARE SHIPPING TO SLAUGHTER – LOADS TOMORROW – AT LEAST 12 BABIES AND MORE EXPECTED!

IT’S GO TIME AGAIN – Just got the call for a pregnant wild mare who is slated to ship tomorrow. I have to commit asap so we can keep her off the slaughter truck.

Catcher called, and so did the shipper. I have AT LEAST 12 MORE BABIES AT THIS MOMENT – and more expected by the time I get there.

However, I CANNOT say yes to saving these kids without raising enough money to pay back the emergency funds that were depleted with this last rescue. With the balances left for the unexpected repairs on the trucks and trailers, the last batch of hay and the previous vetting, even the emergency funds are depleted. Chilly Pepper cannot responsibly commit to saving more horses without having enough money to care for the horses we already have saved.

I am sure if there are 12 babies now, by the time I get up there we will be looking at a much larger number. The catchers are out in full force trying to get as many rounded up as they can before winter.

I realize the world as we once knew it is upside down. I am having to make decisions based on the reality of our current situation. I can only save horses I know I can provide and care for. I am hoping that y’all want them saved enough to skip a latte, or a night out, or that much loved pedicure. Times are tough, but these horses do not deserve to be slaughtered.

More and more people are dumping horses and it seems like we are doing quite a bit of “hospice type care”. Saving these animals and providing the love and care they so deserve for the short bit of time I often have with them is important.

YOU decide how many I (we – together) can keep saving.

CAN WE RAISE ENOUGH FUNDS TO SAVE THIS PREGNANT MARE AND ALL OF THE BABIES? I am praying so.

Thank you for your wonderful donation and all of the love and support.

I wanted to take a couple minutes to stop and say “thank you” for your life-saving donation. I cannot begin to express my appreciation for your help saving these precious lives.

This group is a hot mess. We have two babies who had huge chunks of their faces ripped away by “an adult horse?” (That is the info I was given.) The injuries are pretty horrific and we have 2 others with infected legs and another who was stepped on and can barely walk. So sadly, lots of injuries that need a lot of special care and medication.

Grandma Sue is in with one of the babies and loving it. She is missing most all of her teeth, so is another “special needs” lady. It is so nice to watch her with the baby. They bring so much comfort to each other.

Sadly Great Grandma Lilly most likely has very little time. She was down this morning and I was not sure if she would be able to get back up. Thankfully our prayer chain was answered and she is up again. SHE IS A VERY HAPPY GIRL THOUGH.

We had her hoofers done, had her vetted yesterday and have given her every thing the vet could think of to help her get stronger. Her teeth are horrific, but Doc said “her legs are even worse”, and that is not good. She is simply enjoying the loves and having food that she can actually eat. She is drinking and eating well, but there has been a tremendous amount of damage done to her poor body. I am afraid she will only be here for a short time, but at least she is not going to die scared and alone, but rather surrounded by love and having a full belly and no pain.

She loves to cuddle, and can do so much longer than I can stand on my leg. She is obviously feeling very safe and is surrounded by other horses, but none can steal her feed. It is a gift to be able to spend her last days loving and caring for her.

I hope God has His vengeance with the man who did this to her. :(

911 CALL TO SAVE GRANDMA & GREAT GRANDMA FROM SLAUGHTER A CALL FOR AT LEAST 9 MORE BABIES AT THE SHIPPER! CLOCK IS TICKING

A HEARTBREAKING CALL FOR AN ABUSED, EMACIATED “GREAT GRANDMA”. Lilly is a 35? year old mare who was on her way to a horrific end. Her feet are horrible, she can barely walk, she is starved beyond measure and her teeth are a nightmare. Yet even after being abused and neglected, she is still the sweetest thing on this earth. WILL YOU HELP ME HELP HER?

You can clearly see by how uneven her teeth are that she has had no care, and has been slowly starving to death.

I honestly don’t know if we can offer her more than good food, comfort, and no pain, but I will do every possible thing I can to make the rest of her short life the best of her life. But I need your help to do that.

ANOTHER HEARTBREAK – Grandma Sue is a wild, very old, very thin mare who does NOT deserve to be crammed into a crowded trailer and trampled on the way to the slaughter house. I honestly do not know if she will much time left either, but it should certainly be one where she is loved and cared for.

I have AT LEAST 9 MORE BABIES coming, NOT INCLUDING the 4 we just got. So we need to vet 15 more kids on Monday, so I can hopefully head back to NV. The stock trailer is finally fixed, to the tune of $2500+, but we have to be safe when we haul this precious cargo.

I realize the emergencies keep on coming, (believe me, I am emotionally and physically exhausted, especially because I am here alone), but these babies and these “old ladies” feel like their life is just as important as the other ones we saved. So PLEASE help me save them if you can. The Shipper is loading tomorrow, so I need to commit to “Grandma Sue” immediately, and let him know if you want to save her, and if I can take the babies. I have to raise enough funds to safely do so.

If you want me to save these before I head back to NV, I need your help now!
The babies have no where else to go. Every life matters, and I guess these kids are also part of the reason God kept me here, because if I had gone home, Grandma and Great Grandma would be facing a horrific ending, and we all know what that means. However, since I am still here, with your help, we can save them both.

Dakota is hanging in there. Doc said his eye will most likely need to be removed when I get back home, but at least some of the pressure has been relieved and the horrible wound on his side is draining nicely. THANK YOU for helping him!
