Happy Autumn

Hello again! Remember me? Apologies for the lack of newsletters. To be honest, I have just not felt up to writing. The current state of affairs in the world has knocked me off my perch a bit. I do miss writing about what is going on as a LOT has been going on at Broomtail Farm, home of Save Your Ass Long Ear Rescue.

It’s been quite stressful dealing with the increase in the price of just about everything we need. Supplies are more expensive; feed is more expensive; our hay price went up by 3.50 a bale! Hopefully we will be able to find enough to get us through the winter. Our Shelter Logic buildings all bit the dust this year so new hay storage sheds were required. We figured even though the initial investment was much greater, a shed will last a heck of a lot longer.

Hannah has been working like crazy and the results are apparent. We have taken in quite a few animals in need of medical care and training. All the animals that came in as “unhandleable” are now enjoying physical attention. All have had their VERY PRICY medical issues taken care of. Thank you, Hannah!

We have been getting a lot of calls from folks needing to surrender their animals. So many that we currently have a waiting list as we just don’t have the room or resources to take in more at this time.

We have just made the sad decision not to have our Open House again this year due to the pandemic. The Delta variant has been prevalent in our area, and we do not want to put anyone at risk. We are not doing Equine Affaire this year also due to the pandemic. We miss seeing our friends and supporters in person, but it’s not worth the risk of having anyone become ill.

For a wee bit of good news, we will be getting some new merchandise in for your holiday shopping. We have recently got in a few adoption applications, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

CHILLY PEPPER – Quick update on horses shipping to slaughter

The following is from Chilly Pepper – Miracle Mustang:

Quick Update on the Catcher’s horses.

Just got home from meeting with the Catcher. This is killing me. There is simply no way to save everyone. I am already physically ill from having to say yes or no.

The only good news is that I have 5 days to raise the funds to save as many as we can.

The goal is to raise at least $1500 for each horse. I have to be able to provide proper care and feed for them until they are adopted.

For a mare and foal pair, $500 – bail and vetting for the pair

$350 – hay for the month

$200 – Foal Lac Pellets (Mare is emaciated)

$125 – Mama and baby grain

So after bail, vetting and basic feed for the 1st month, it costs $1175, and that does not include any medicine, special care, transport etc. The likelihood of having them for over several months is high, especially because this particular pair are in horrible shape and the baby has a very badly injured face.

So $1500 won’t even cover the cost for two months for this particular pair if baby needs stitches.

I am hoping to pull at least 10 if not more.

Thankfully I am supposed to have until the 25th to raise enough funds. Originally the deadline was today, but if we can pull at least 10, we have until the 25th.

Please help me keep saying YES, to saving these lives.

I Need Your Help Asap!

We currently have 6 new babies, along with the other 12 horses and a draft named Tiny at camp, not to mention the horses in NV. (Tiny had to go to the emergency vet this morning!) Mario is still with us, but having issues getting up by himself.

CATCHER just CALLED and I will be heading over TODAY so I can let him know who and how many orphans and/or horses we can save.

There is nothing harder than walking up to a group of horses and choosing who lives or dies. I am literally physically sick. WE are the ONLY CHANCE for any of them to stay off the slaughter truck. I have nightmares about the horses I leave behind. It isn’t fair, but if I don’t go, NONE of them will avoid being shipped.

I need funds to purchase, vet, transport, feed and care for every horse I pull.

It is a terrifying time to take on more horses as Adoptions are lower than normal due to our efforts still being maliciously shut down. Adopters are still being contacted and told something is wrong with the horse, it has been adopted, it is dangerous etc. etc.

I am running on FAITH, a broken heart and pure exhaustion. Faith that God will guide me and that my amazing Chilly Pepper Family will fight as hard as I do to save as many as we can!!

Funds are extremely low and vet bills keep climbing. Doc is coming tomorrow for more coggins. The boys just got gelded. So it goes in rescue.

Blood and guts and open wounds are the easy ones. I can handle those myself. However, I cannot do x-rays, blood tests, life saving Plasma etc. without a vet.

Tiny is currently in the hospital. He is our latest rescue and he came in last night. We know he has neurological issues, as well as possible laminitis. He needs to remain in the hospital until the pain is controlled enough to take x-rays and make sure his coffin bones have not rotated beyond help.

Please help me keep saying YES, to saving these lives.

Today, we are mourning the loss of our sweetest Daisy. Our girl had a challenging nine days of ups and downs, and yesterday, we helped her across the Rainbow Bridge to set her free to run across green pastures with her ol’ friends, Angus and Kasey.

Daisy came to AAE in 2016 with her big buddies, Angus and Kasey, after a family health crisis. She was six. Angus and Kasey were older draft fellas, much beloved AAE residents that have since passed. Lil Daisy was the boss of these two big guys, and she exerted her authority when it came to meal time!

Everyone was so fascinated by Daisy. From Marshallow and Patches to the rest of the farm critters….well, except maybe the sheep! It didn’t take long for the herd’s hierarchy to play out.

Daisy had the best ears in the world. Besides adorable, they were soft and fuzzy, and though she thoroughly enjoyed her spa days, her favorite was ear massages. She loved having her ears rubbed.

She was a big character, too. Her lil’ personality was precious. There was countless moments of laughter when Daisy was around.

Those of you that know Daisy know that her bestest friend was lil’ ol’ Sammy-boy. This little guy is going to miss her sooooooo very much. Please keep him in your prayers and send him lots of love. For now, he’s settling in with the mini boys, Flame, Robbie, and Dusty. It seems Flame’s wisdom understands his broken heart the best. Hang in there Sammy, you’ll have lots of love to help you along.

What I’ll miss most about this sweet girl was the softness of her muzzle and the kindness in her mouth. She gave the most loving nuzzles and nibbles, always a warm, fuzzy moment from her. If you experienced those lips, you’ll know what I mean. Kind of odd from the lil woolly mammoth.

Oh, Dais…it was so long before your time. Thank you for giving everyone such wonderful memories….sweet, cute, precious, warm, kind, funny, and all the gamut of emotions. You were such a sweet and special soul. You were loved by many, and we’ll remember you, always.

Daisy spent the last nine days hospitalized at Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center where the docs worked hard to resolve her colicky symptoms. She initially improved, then had some ups and downs, we had encouraging days, but the last couple days became very difficult, to say the least. In the end, there was nothing more we could do to ease her pain. We thank everyone for the love, support, concern, and warm words during this time. As many of you know, the costs of care for hospitalization can be challenging. If you’d like to make a donation to AAE in memory of Daisy, we would very much appreciate the opportunity to pay it forward to the next equine in need.

CHILLY PEPPER – Starved, Abandoned Orphan Foal – Heartbreak, More Babies and an Emergency Visit to the Vet Needed to Possibly Save Another Life.

Quick update.

My heart is shattered and the tears are pouring. My Beautiful Mia Moo, my ever precious little Maniac, is now in Heaven running and loving life pain free. Her little bones never developed and you cannot fix what isn’t there (as Doc said). She had so much wrong, but I will post her story later.

I have 4 babies as of right now, and more expected. Mario is in extremely critical shape and I am praying he makes it through the night. Both Docs are on other emergencies so he will be in Goldendale at 8 a.m.

PLEASE pray for him. He is not only starved and was abandoned by his band at least 5 days ago, but he is literally being eaten alive by worms.

The other 3 are hanging in there. I need more milk for these precious souls and as always, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

We can all learn from my beloved Mia Moo. She lived life 110 miles an hour, almost as if she knew she had to experience a lifetime of fun and love in only a few months. I will be sending out a tribute to her later, but for now it is simply too raw.

For the folks who sit home and whine about how they hurt or have issues, learn from Mia. She struggled from day 1, but she never pouted or whined. She rocked her life. She lived it to the fullest and went a thousand miles an hour and when she crashed she did it with the same intensity. I will explain how she told us her motto, but for now I will simply share it.

LIVE YOUR DREAM! That is directly from Mia.

OF COURSE there is once again No Time for me to even grieve…….

All I wanted was to have some quiet time, but these new babies are here and they need my full attention. Sadly we are expecting more in the next few days.

Another call from the catcher!

Can we save more babies? It’s “go time” again. One today and I was told there are up to 12 or more l need to be ready for. I have no idea if I will actually get one more, or bunches more.

Little Miss Pepsi came in today. She is exhausted and was exhibiting some neurological issues, but I believe they are temporary. As you can clearly see from her picture she is exhausted, bewildered, sad and wondering what happened to her world and her family. Her neck was swollen when she got here, but it seems to be a little bit better after having her banamine.

We need to order more milk, milk pellets and supplies in general. We gelded two stallions today and pulled Coggins on the new kids, so our vet bill at Harrah will be close to $2,000 again. (It was recently paid off, but that was for a minute.)

Thank you to everyone who helped with our vet bill at Goldendale. It was reduced by close to a thousand, and then increased nearly that much again. We are running about $2,200, and I have to take Mia back tomorrow.

The new mare Diamond had her blood drawn today, and she has improved tremendously already.

Please help me keep saying YES, to saving these lives. It was such a blessing to be able to save the entire family. You did that with your love and support.

Starving Mare is at Death’s Door. Can we Save Her? She needs to go to the vet asap! IT’S GO TIME!

Another Urgent 911 – This mare has been starved nearly to death!!

This beautiful soul needs emergency help! She is wild, which makes things trickier, but if she has a chance to live, it is with Chilly Pepper combined with some serious vet care. I am praying she is not pregnant, but no one ever really knows with the wilds.

We still owe Goldendale Vet $2500+ dollars, and I need to get the “new family” vetted, the boys gelded, and Mia still needs x-rays. Our wonderful friend Janet has promised $250 towards Mia’s x-rays, but we are far from being able to pay the existing vet bill and incur new ones. It is a very tough time for rescues everywhere.

We did save the ENTIRE FAMILY, thanks to your beautiful hearts! PTL! Now it is time to get them vetted and ready for adoption.

Please help me help this mare before it is too late!! There is a very good chance that she has permanent damage to her organs, or a worm load that could actually be deadly. I need to get her taken care of asap. She needs blood work.

I don’t even know what to say. I am so excited to think we could save the entire family. I was told there is a stallion and 5 others, one of whom is said to be blind.

I want to say Yes!! Sadly finances are still a huge issue.

Even after today (I paid nearly $700 to Harrah Vet, (on top of the last $1800) for Coggins, and $1500 to Goldendale), there is still a balance of $2500 to pay off. Thank you Janet for your amazing donation of $1000 for the vet bill at Goldendale.

Mia needs x-rays. She is spunky, bossy and doing well, but we are still not sure about her legs. Doc said bring her in for x-rays. Sadly I need to pay off the $2500 bill at Goldendale first.

I need funds to purchase the band, get them vetted, get the boys we have gelded, transport them home and buy groceries for everyone.

PTL! We have water at Chilly Pepper in NV.

We ended up spending a little over $3500 for the new pump, wiring, pipes n even improved the water lines a little bit.

So many folks stepped up to try n help. Thank you to everyone who donated to help with the well, etc.

We are now working on the hay, rescue supplies and vet bills. I was told I need to pick up more horses in a couple days

Sadly Delgado is still a stallion. He is only the 2nd one I have watched in over 23 years, work himself up so much that the drugs wouldn’t work. We ended on a very quiet note, but now Doc has to come out again. It actually turned into quite the training session.

Anyone in NV who would like to meet Mia & Ford in person, come join us for some Sunshine & Smiles next to Piper’s in Virginia City between 3-5 on Friday. (Friday 27th)

The following is from Chilly Pepper – Miracle Mustang:

When it rains it pours.

We have NO water at our rescue in Nevada. The pump has burned out. The cost to locate the well, (no one has any idea where it actually is), replace the pump and get the water going will be anywhere from $1,900 to $4,000 depending on whether we need to rent an excavator, and how long it takes to actually get water. As for now we will be paying folks to truck it in.

(Luckily our ladies who take care of the rescue while I am not there have made sure the horses are ok up to this point.)

It is past time to order a load of hay before supplies run out and the prices jump even higher. We are looking at a truck load around $6500 for the NV horses. As most everyone knows, there is a critical hay shortage and it is imperative we get what we need for winter now while there is still hay available.

I am on standby for some extremely emaciated mustangs. Their range has zero feed and almost no water. They are supposed to be coming for the next couple months. The pictures I was sent were extremely hard to look at and many of them are literally at death’s door. I need to stock up on supplies for the care they will need. At this time I am loading up the trailer with milk, pellets, electrolytes, meds etc. I have no idea how many or exactly when they will call. I was just asked to be ready and on stand by.

I received an urgent call for this emaciated grandpa. I honestly do not know if we can save him, but I am ready to try. Please help me save him.

Mia is hanging in there and taking teeny tiny baby steps forward. Ford is also still here.

I picked up 6 more babies and a wild stallion and his pregnant mare. I need help to pay for them and get hay, feed and supplies.

Please help if you can. I have also been called to help at a different location for an emergency rescue in a couple of weeks. Trying to get things in order, but I will need to restock everything. Drought and lack of feed are destroying their habitat and conditions are dire.

I am running out of room. So many babies and horses keep coming in.

Another 911! More babies and ??? to pick up tomorrow.

To buy 20 more panels and some gates would take about $3500, plus we are running out of everything. I need more pens!

We need more milk, hay, grain, shavings etc. This many horses take lots of TLC and supplies.

I want to say YES tomorrow to as many as I can.

Ford was found emaciated, alone and near death on the range. He has been to the vet for Colostrum (Plasma transfusion), but needs lots of prayers. Mia is now confined to a sling for two weeks, but struggling. She has a 50/50 chance of having a viable life. She has Incomplete Ossification of her Cuboidal Bones from being such a preemie. Her chances are slim, so please say a prayer.

Thank you to all the wonderful folks who have been helping. It has been a year.

Once again I acted on Faith and took Mia into the vet. Doc was wonderful about the fact she needed help asap. We have to get the bills wrapped up, but they are amazing and put Mia’s needs first.

I so appreciate the donations and milk support. These horses would literally not be alive without your love and support!

With 14 kids, all on milk, I am going through Foal Lac Pellets and Foal Lac Powder by the buckets. The costs to care for 21 horses, with hay, grain, vetting, shavings, milk, medicines etc. is astronomical. I have to catch up before the next kids get here. I have been told to “get ready to be slammed”.

MIA update – her paralysis is gone, PTL! The swelling in her neck went down and her nerves came back. She is still having huge issues with her right front leg, and tried to jump a 6 foot fence. Being trampled and attacked as a newborn instills a great deal of fear. She now has “Marbles’ with her and they are both slowly learning that they can safely hang out.

STANDING by for more babies still. It is never ending and oh so exhausting, but there are some very lucky kids here thanks to y’all!

For the past 8 years AAE has received significant financial support from the auctions held during Boots & Bling. Unfortunately, we are still short of our goal for items to be auctioned during this year’s event. We are requesting urgent help with donations of experiences, destinations, services, and unique items that will inspire our horse-loving community to bid, helping fund the care, support, and feeding of the horses as well as the infrastructure needs of AAE.

Examples of auction items that could help bring in donations include airline miles, a vacation rental or timeshare, hotel stays, travel experiences, tickets to a sporting event or any event, a round of golf, a sailboat experience, an activity, a fishing trip, theatre tickets, an excursion, a wine tasting experience, a lunch date with a wizard, an educational opportunity, appliances (air conditioner, wood burning stove, refrigerator, grill, television, etc.), skis or a snowboard for the slopes, a boat, a truck, a trip to the Amazon, wine, beer, other spirits, gift cards of any kind, or any other ideas you might have!

We are truly an organization that is powered by our community through your support, donations, and volunteerism – please reach out through your network to secure auction items, helping AAE to continue rescuing animals in need. This year is especially important to us as we continue in our transition to the new property in Pilot Hill. Crippled baby MIA, NEEDS to go back to the vet. She has a 50/50 chance of recovering and healing from the paralysis in her spine.

I need to take her to Goldendale Veterinary today, but the bill is about $2,600 and I need to pay it asap.

Our bill at Harrah Veterinary is close to $1500 +/-.

Catcher called.. Babies in the trap. 3 and most likely more. One needs a big hernia repair, or she can go ???? However I cannot keep saving horses we can’t afford to take care of. There are also MORE coming. Do I say yes?

I’m really hoping I can get some of the funds for the vet bill, as Mia needs to go Today!

Three more orphans arrived – one rushed to emergency vet for Plasma and treatment due to other horses attacking and biting her. New Vet bill is already over $1000

Grandpa Duke went into congestive heart failure, and is now running free in heaven.

Ellie was over 25 and not only starved, but extremely crippled with her coffin bone rotating through her hoof.

These cases are devastating and beyond heartbreaking. However, I got the call for the new babies before I even got home from taking the big kids in. As broken as I am, I don’t have time to grieve, because these new lives matter just as much.

MEET “GRANDPA DUKE“

He is emaciated, can barely walk and had blood coming from his mouth. Once again, I acted on Faith. I had to say yes. I am not sure if I can save him, but he will get the very best care possible and is already getting so much love. One look and my heart was done. Those sad, worried eyes just stole my soul.

I was called for 3 urgent, emergency cases. The mare Ellie is on her way to starving and has an old, obviously very painful injury to her leg. She is in extremely poor shape and needs medical attention for her leg immediately.

Prada is a quarter pony with a bad head injury that was left untreated due to the fact she is wild. Her miracle is that she escaped being shipped once, only to end up back in the shipping pen at the auction, headed to slaughter again. The fact that the injury on her face is getting worse is definitely concerning, and she needs immediate medical care.

Apparently this seems to be an “every day” thing? It will take roughly $2500 to save all THREE of these kids, (Bail, vetting, medications, groceries, transport etc.) That will most likely be a drop in the bucket of what it will take to get them healthy and ready for adoption. Doc is already schedule for tomorrow morning and I can only pray we can save all of them.

Please help if you can, and THANK YOU for all you do. I understand the need is constant and probably annoying – but I HAVE TO ask for help when God puts one of these souls in front of me. I will do the work, but can’t provide what they need without your love and support!

(We NOW HAVE 18 horses scheduled for Coggins on Friday morning. So our vet bills keep on coming.)

It’s hard to see what I am writing, as the tears keep pouring down my face. My beautiful Ghost and my Moose are gone. Yesterday I had to answer their pleas to end their suffering. It’s hard to even breathe, yet “time to grieve” doesn’t seem to be mine.

Hours ago, I was sorting horses, opening gates while the tears slid down. I needed to be ready for the group I was called to save this morning.

When there are literally 6 more lives at stake, you keep wiping away the tears and “git ‘er done”, no matter how badly you want to scream “no more”. There are times when I simply don’t know how to keep going.

It seems like no matter how much you cry, the pain just follows you. All I know is is God keeps putting these special needs kids in front of me. So as long as He gives me the strength, and Y’all keep making it possible with your love n support, I will try to keep saving these precious lives.

Their is so much hospice type care this year, it’s unreal.

We have 15 horses scheduled for Coggins on Friday morning. So our vet bills keep on coming. Sadly the new kids still want their milk as well, so as always the need continues, and once again I used funds for milk to actually “save” the babies.

For the past 8 years AAE has received significant financial support from the auctions held during Boots & Bling. Unfortunately right now we are well short of our goal for items to be auctioned during this year’s event on August 21. We are requesting urgent help in finding experiences, services, and unique items that will inspire our horse-loving community to bid, helping fund the care, support, and feeding of the horses as well as the infrastructure needs of AAE.

Examples of auction items that could help bring in donations include airline miles, a vacation rental or timeshare, a travel experience, tickets to a sporting event or other event, a round of golf, a sailboat experience, an activity, a fishing trip, theatre tickets, an excursion, a wine tasting experience, a lunch date with a wizard, an educational opportunity, appliances (air conditioner, wood burning stove, refrigerator, grill, television, etc.), skis or a snowboard for the slopes, a boat, a truck, a trip to the Amazon, or any other ideas you might have!

We are truly an organization that is powered by our community through your support, donations, and volunteerism – please reach out through your network to secure auction items, helping AAE to continue rescuing animals in need.
