Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018

On the 27th Day, there was Lilly, Ivy, Maverick and Dawn!
All About Equine focuses its efforts on horses, but every once in a while,
we have the opportunity to help other animals.
This year, we had two senior alpacas, a goat, and a sheep move on to their forever homes.
Maverick and Dawn came to AAE after their family had to downsize from their property.  They were one of many breeding pairs, but time ran out for their owners.  Turns out, Dawn was pregnant.  We had no idea when she was due to deliver, only that her belly became suspiciously round.  We made the mistake of not separating her and Maverick. Before we knew it, she delivered a really cute little guy, and papa was so proud, he wasted no time in making sure baby alpaca number two was on its way.
(PS, not something WE are proud of).  Needless to say, it wasn’t long before the vet made a visit to Maverick, and much to his dismay, he lost the family jewels.
  
Much to our chagrin, last year we discovered a “skinny-ness” under Maverick’s woolly rug when he was sheared. When we had his teeth floated, we learned how “senior” he was.  His teeth were wearing down to the gums.  He was put on a pellet diet (sound familiar???) and thus started a new feeding routine amidst our “farm” area.  Turns out, Dawn is older than Mav, but her teeth were in better shape.  We tried the pellets and new feeding routine for many, many months, and Mav’s condition improved some, but he wasn’t thriving.  Our “farm” was too diverse and there was too much food competition for the ol’ guys.  Almost coincidentally, one sunny day, a family stopped by looking for a couple of farm animals to call home at their new property.  It was a perfect situation for these two to have their own space and their own food.  Mom fell in love, and since it was Mother’s Day weekend, she gifted herself two senior alpacas.  It was a bit poetic.
Lilly and Ivy, they have their stories, too!  Ivy came to us after her mom rejected her.  She was one of three lambs, and mom could only manage two.  Poor lil’ Ivy was left behind.  She was raised at AAE as a bottle baby, and she earned a lil’ job in our kids programs.  However, she loved kids so much, she wanted to “play” with them.  Unfortunately, she grew….and grew….and grew.  For the littlest of littles, it was quite intimidating, and before you knew it, the littles would cry of fright!  Poor Ivy, she just wanted to be part of the fun.  Thankfully, one of our adopters saw her cute little mug on our website and welcomed her at her farm where she could frolic w/goats and mini horses.
  
Lilly was welcomed at AAE as a “maybe”.  The same day Ivy lost her mom, and poor Lilly lost her newborn kids in a tragic accident.  We thought “maybe” it was an (unusual) match in the making.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t.  Not even close!  Lilly’s a super sweet mini-nubian….well, not so sure about the mini, but definitely sweet.  She, too, loved the kids so much, she really put her mind to it when she tried to get attention.  She butted everyone that got in her way…..farm animals and humans. Sadly, she was “scary”, too!  Fortunately for her, one of our prior horse adopters lost one of their older goats and it’s buddy was left to mourn alone.  Lilly wasted no time becoming a new best friend.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018

On the 28th Day, there was Easton!
Little Easton was abandoned on a remote road when she was about six months old, and neighbors in the area saw her hobbling on the streets for several days before calling animal control. After she was picked up, the local animal control contacted AAE for assistance in March 2016.   Easton was partially to non-weight bearing on her right hind.  She was initially diagnosed with a potential abscess or coffin bone fracture.
Imagine the little gal, she was a stray, without food or water, out alone on the country roads and probably had not felt safe enough to rest.  Once in a paddock at animal control, she laid down, but couldn’t get up.  We took her in at AAE and upon extensive evaluation by our vet (movement evaluation, sedation, palpation, radiographs, etc.), we learned that Easton had a fractured pelvis.  Her prognosis was questionable.  Despite the fracture, she seemed very happy, and she was an otherwise healthy, friendly, and outgoing filly with youth on her side. After discussing all options, we decided to give her 60-days to see how she progressed.
Easton is a fighter; she did amazingly well.  She was closely monitored on stall rest for months.  She reached a milestone after six months, and her hip radiographs looked GOOD!  However, she had a setback during the last couple months of her stall rest. She was a very large yearling, and her rapid growth coupled with confinement due to the fracture resulted in contracted tendons that caused her to “knuckle” over her front fetlocks when she walked. Another hurdle for this always smiling lil filly; we tried some more conservative options with wrapping, stretching, special shoes, and exercise, but no luck.  She needed check ligament surgery to help relax the tendons in her front legs.
Three months after surgery, Easton was doing great.  However, due to the pelvic fracture, she had limitations making her a difficult horse to adopt.  She would not be able to be ridden, so she needed a special home where she could be an incredible companion for someone seeking a horsey friend, and earlier this year she FOUND the most amazing home!  A wonderful family adopted Easton (and another AAE horse, Jolene) to be a companion to their older gelding.
 
Easton is an absolute character with an amazing personality. This filly is a special girl that has touched many of AAE’s volunteers and visitors who met her!
CONGRATULATIONS LIL GIRL!!  We miss you, but we are soooo happy for you!

Senate Passes Tax Bill, Moves to “Conference” to Negotiate Final Package

Senate Passes Tax Bill, Moves to “Conference” to Negotiate Final Package

Senators scrambled Saturday, December 2, to muster the necessary 51 votes to pass its version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, effectively laying down a marker to jump start negotiations with the House of Representatives on a final package.  While details related to the senate bill continue to emerge, please see the below highlights of key provisions that will impact the equine industry.  Many of these provisions diverge from the House-passed version and could be subject to changes during the House and Senate conference, which congressional leadership will organize this week:

Business Provisions

  • Corporate Tax Rate: The senate bill delays reduction of the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20% until 2019. By contrast, H.R. 1 provides an immediate corporate tax cut, effective in 2018.  Lawmakers will have to bridge this gap during the conference committee.
  • Small Business:  The senate vehicle establishes a 23% deduction for small business income of “pass-thru entities,” or small companies which opt to pay taxes under the individual rate.  Senators included this deduction to address concerns from lawmakers who claimed that previous versions of the bill did not create sufficient tax relief for small business.
  • Expensing: While the House bill and a previous version of the senate vehicle provided 100% bonus depreciation, the final senate bill appears to modify treatment of bonus depreciation to “phase down … the percentage from 100% by 20% per calendar year.”  AHC largely supports the House treatment of expensing, which according to Hill sources, includes a broad legislative definition to allow full expensing of horses.
  • Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) – According to Hill sources, the senate vehicle preserves a 20% corporate, alternative minimum tax.  The House bill repeals the unpopular provision altogether, laying the groundwork for a major discussion point during negotiations for a final package.
  • Name and Logo Royalties:  The senate bill strikes a provision from a previous version of the bill that treated “name and logo royalties” as unrelated business taxable income.
  • Wagering Losses:  A previous version of the senate bill states that it amends the existing tax code provision that addresses treatment of gambling winnings, without specifying how.   The current senate vehicle does not appear to clarify this provision, which AHC will continue to monitor.

Individual Provisions

  • Estate Tax: The Senate preserves it commitment to double the estate tax exemption, currently valued at $5.49 million for individuals, without full repeal.  By contrast, H.R. 1 eliminates the estate tax within six years of enactment.
  • State and Local Taxes (SALT) – Senators agreed to an itemized deduction for up to $10,000 in state and local property taxes, which resembles a compromise included in the House bill.
  • Mortgage Interest: The senate version will cap the deduction for mortgage interest indebtedness at $1 million.  H.R. 1, however, establishes a $500,000 cap on interest from new home purchases, a provision drawing criticism from the homebuilders.
  • Charitable Contributions:  In cases of individual cash contributions, the senate bill increases the percentage-limit deduction from the current rate of 50% to 60%.

Heading to the Finish Line

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018

On the 29th Day, there was Sapphire!

Sapphire came to us in August 2010 after family health issues, and we were told she was 24.  Sapph was one of our residents who’s job was to help new volunteers learn about horses.  She loved being groomed and welcomed the oodles of attention that came her way.  We shared her story earlier this year.  It’s a special one we want to share again.
All of our volunteers and visitors that met Sapphy have many happy memories, too.  She helped so many people overcome their fear of horses, and she helped so many people turn their blue days to new days once again.
She had in presence in our herd, too, and we called her Ms. Sassy Pants.  There was no question what her “flat as a pancake” ears meant, and when Sapphire walked, horses listened, even Cowboy learned.  Sapphy was a hoot!
Sapph was known around AAE for her famous “Belly Dance”.  Her favorite past time was standing over a trough, one just tall enough to tickle her belly.  She’d stand this way forever!   The red one was her favorite.  She made us laugh when we would watch her tip her trough over, then side pass over the top.
She was a silly girl, too.  She would humor us with our silly human antics, such as party hats and birthday cakes.  She used to love carrots ’til we tried to disguise her lil’ pills in them.  She didn’t touched one after that.  So sassy!
This ol’ gal gave her all, and she was the most special, most dependable, and most trustworthy girl ’til the end. In August, we had to help our ol’ girl, Sapphire, across the rainbow bridge.  As best we know she was 31 years old.  She stumbled over her toe walking over a rock and fell. It was a bit tough getting up, and though she tried to be most stoic, she injured her hip in the fall.
AAE will never be the same without her. It helps to know she’s running pain free through green pastures once again! She is missed by so many! We love you Ms Sassy Pants!

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018

On the 30th Day, there was Dayton!

 Dayton was just a lil’ one when he arrived from the Fallon feedlot in July 2009.  He was a nursing colt, only about a month old.  He came with his mom, Sierra, and adopted brother Clayton. Clayton was orphaned when his mom shipped to slaughter.  Dayton and mom took Clayton in under their wings. All were sickly and malnourished, but with special care by AAE volunteers, they all survived and eventually flourished.

It didn’t take long, Dayton became best friends with one of our youth volunteers when she helped him learn about halters and lead ropes, humans holding hooves, respect (ha!), and all the other horse-human activities that go along with horses living in a human world (aka, umbrellas in the rain).  The bittersweet day came, and Dayton was adopted.  Our story of young love came to a halt.
Due to an unfortunate family health crisis, Dayton returned to AAE in 2013. He’s baaack, but my goodness, now he’s the BIG man on the block!  Because of his gentle giant nature, our volunteers adored him, and he earned a job at AAE as a program horse.  Dayton called AAE home for several years, but a secret wish held hope that one day the dynamic duo would be reunited.  While back at AAE, the younger horses naturally gravitated towards Uncle Dayton and Grandma Sierra for comfort and leadership.  Grandma Sierra wisely taught them their manners and proper horsey behavior, while Uncle Dayton was the big character that played along with the kiddy antics.

This year, a big dream came true.  With hard work and determination, Dayton’s “girl” made it possible to bring Dayton home.  It was an adoption eight years in the making.

From feedlot to forever, congrats Dayton and Liv!

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
On the 31st Day, there was Marshmallow!


Marshmallow is a 20-something young man that AAE brought in from another rescue as a companion for Patches after her two more youthful friends were adopted. Marshmallow has a light duty job in our youth programs, including Pony Pals Farm Days, Pony Parties, Field Trips, and anything else where he can shine as the center of attention.  He is an amazing little guy, and he LOVES to show off for his little friends (and the big ones, too) in the arena jumping anything he can.  Marshmallow is one of the best ambassadors of the equine persuasion you would ever want to meet.

Last year our sweet Marshmallow had an acute onset of cataracts and could barely see, but he didn’t let it stop him. He still waited at the gate in the morning to come down for his special breakfast. During playtime in the arena with Patches and Daisy, he walked around whinnying like he owned the place. You would have never known by his demeanor that his vision was impaired. Such a sweet soul!  However, he was no longer confident running, and jumping was not such a good thing.

While Marshmallow was accepting of his situation, YOU, our generous supporters, made it possible to restore his vision in one eye.  Earlier this year, Marshmallow had his cataract surgery. It was a success! Bringing back vision to one eye not only helped his every day life, but he was able to go back to doing what he does best….putting smiles on everyone’s face.  He could run, he could jump, and he enjoys playing with kids in the arena.

Without you, Marshy would not have had this opportunity.

2017 Census of Agriculture Gets Underway

2017 Census of Agriculture Gets Underway

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service has started mailing the 2017 Census of Agriculture to America’s horse farms. Mailing in phases, all census questionnaires should be received by late December. If you do not receive a questionnaire this year, or have not received one ever, but wish to be included, you can sign up at https://www.agcounts.usda.gov/legacy0/cgi-bin/counts. Producers can respond online at www.agcensus.usda.gov or by mail. The American Horse Council encourages all qualified operations to participate and be counted. The deadline to respond is February 5, 2018.

Conducted once every five years, the census aims to get a complete and accurate picture of American agriculture. The resulting data are used by trade associations, researchers, policymakers, extension educators, agribusinesses, and many others. The data can play a vital role in community planning, farm assistance programs, technology development, farm advocacy, agribusiness setup, rural development, and more. This information may provide a critical snapshot of the equine industry that, when coupled with the AHC Economic Impact Study, will provided the evidence needed to affect important change here in Washington D.C.

American Horse Council Efforts to Address ELD Mandate

Over the past months the American Horse Council (AHC) has reached out to the equine community to determine the potential impact of the upcoming Electronic Logging Device mandate. Based on the information received, the AHC, in collaboration with the rest of the animal agriculture community, has requested that the Department of Transportation (DOT) grant a one-year enforcement delay followed by a waiver and limited exemptions from compliance with the December 18, 2017 implementation date for the Final Rule on Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and Hours of Service (HOS). Additionally, we requested that the DOT address the significant problems with the mandate that will occur if the compliance deadline is not extended. The welfare, safety, and health of the animals in transit, together with the safety of other drivers on the road, are top priorities for the equine industry and its enthusiasts.

The livestock sector has consistently been one of the safest of the commercial hauling sectors. The Large Truck Crash Causation Study, conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Institute, showed that of 1,123 accidents involving trucks hauling cargo, only five involved the transportation of livestock. Similarly, the report titled Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents Fact-book 2005 , conducted by the Transportation Research Institute, shows that livestock transporters accounted for just 0.7 percent of fatal accidents. The ELD mandate itself, which is the subject of this petition, does nothing to improve that record of safety over paper logs.

While this figure is not irrelevant, and any safety improvements should be considered, the trajectory of this rule’s implementation has left much to be desired.  Despite its being issued nearly two years ago, awareness of this rule among livestock haulers and the equine industry is nearly non-existent. For instance, FMCSA’s recent change to include livestock in its interpretation of the 150-air mile exemption for agricultural commodities, a change that the industry strongly supports and appreciates, has raised many additional questions from livestock haulers who are unsure about the mechanics of the new exemption and even if it means they are exempt from the ELD mandate altogether. More time is needed to reach out to the horse industry, and ensure that industry outreach can address ELD compliance and ELD impact.

Many horse operations and competitions are in rural areas, routinely requiring long, and repeated, trips. These animals, when loaded onto trailers, are vulnerable to changes in temperature, humidity, and precipitation. Horse haulers are accustomed to managing these changing conditions through planning, log books and notations in those books. These planning techniques have adapted and evolved over decades as technology has improved. Unfortunately, the quick transition to ELDs does not allow for the natural trial and error process to adequately meet the needs of the horse industry.

The equine industry and the millions of horse fans who attend equine events rely on safe and effective methods of transportation from every corner of the United States. Domestic transit of our competition and breeding animals is critical to the business continuity of our industry and largely relies on the use of large commercial haulers. These individuals have expressed their concern with the implications of this rule in regards to the negative impacts to standards in welfare, biosecurity and cost.

We are disappointed that the FMCSA did not feel the need to reach out to the larger livestock industry stakeholders prior to finalizing this rule, but specifically for not reaching out to the equine industry considering the constant and repeated travel inherent to the competitive, coast to coast nature of our industry. While horse haulers are able to provide more accommodating shipping conditions compared to other livestock sectors, the issues we have with immediate implementation of the rule mirror those of the larger animal agriculture community.

The American Horse Council will continue to petition for an enforcement delay, to be followed by a waiver and/or limited exemptions from compliance with the final rule on ELDs, and specifically the expected Hours of Service (HOS). Additionally we will continue to take advantage of any opportunity to collaborate with FMCSA and the DOT during this delay to better meet the needs of the animal agriculture community on future regulatory efforts.

Magic, Oh Magic

Oh, how I wish we could work a little Magic for you, sweet boy.

You came to us in tatters, but no matter how hard we tried, time and again, you wouldn’t fixed.

The year turned had just 2014.  You and you’re girl, Love, what a pair.  Together, abandoned and neglected.  Left to fend for yourselves.  Not only malnourished, but many aggressive sarcoids and a squamous cell carcinoma.  Fifteen in all was bad enough, but the conditions made them difficult to see.

The two of you were quite the duo!  Magic, oh flamboyant one!
Love, the princess.  We were always quite entertained.
 
Love was lucky to recover quickly and find her forever home.  Sadly, luck was surely not on your side.

Nothing would get you down, so we tried and we tried.
Fortunately, special people at AAE were forever yours.
They took you into their hearts and showered you with love and attention.
Today, love told us it was time to let go.

Yesterday went better than we ever could have hoped.

Across the country, supporters like you stepped up on Giving Tuesday in a huge way. We blew through our initial $25,000 goal, and got almost 1,000 individual donations. And because of our matching gift, all of those gifts will go twice as far.

We can’t thank you enough for your support — and it couldn’t come at a more crucial time. Your donations will fuel these critical programs to save wild horses and burros:

Litigation: Right now, our legal team is defending wild horses in two federal appellate court cases. We’re fighting to uphold our lower court victories against a rancher lawsuit seeking roundup and slaughter of Utah wild horses and the BLM’s attempts to destroy the Saylor Creek wild horse population in Idaho bysurgically sterilizing every stallion and mare living there. 

On the ground: As you read this, the AWHC team is in the field to document a BLM helicopter roundup underway today in Utah. We’re showing the world what’s happening to our wild horses and burros in these remote regions of the West, and we’re generating the public support necessary to stop our government’s cruel treatment of these national icons.

Advocacy: Our wild horses deserve the best possible representation in the halls of Washington, and that’s just what our bipartisan legislation team is doing — making sure that policies affecting wild horses are evidence-based, humane, and strictly enforced.

For the second year in a row, the UHC is participating in #GivingTuesday, but this time in two different ways!

1. Donate to the UHC to help support our popular Operation Gelding program, which provides materials, guidance, and financial support to organizations that wish to host low or  no-cost gelding clinics. Our goal is to raise $2,000 which will allow us to provide funding for one clinic, or up to 20 vouchers for individual horse owners in need. Donate $20.18 to help us start 2018 off on a good note-Donate today!

2. Help support your favorite 501c3 equine welfare organization for a chance to win them $500 in Operation Gelding vouchers by participating in our second annual #UNselfie contest on Facebook. Ears the news…

I apologize for the lack of newsletters. Between heading off to CA for the Donkey Welfare Symposium, coming home just long enough to unpack, wash my clothes and repack. I was then off to set up and (wo)man our booth at Equine Affaire along with great helpers Jennifer Molnar, Pamela Simmons, Joan Gemme, and Mike Dunham.  As always it was great to see many old friends who stop by every year to see what’s new for merchandise and to share stories of their donkey friends, many of whom were adopted from SYA! I also look forward to meeting new friends every year at this exhausting, but fun event.

Just before leaving I had a call about a very sad donkey named Sal. Sal’s person suffers from mental illness and had left his home for parts unknown leaving poor Sal behind. A kind neighbor called to see if Save Your Ass could help. Of course we were happy to take him in.  This poor fellow had not had his hooves trimmed in a very long time. They were sadly overgrown and misshapen.

Sal is a sweetheart of a donkey. Even though he must have been very uncomfortable, he came in just as loving as can be.  We let him settle in a bit and spoiled him with lots of love and attention. He was just seen by our veterinarian who gave him his vaccinations and a clean bill of health. Our farrier was here and gave him a fabulous trim, so he is once again walking like a “normal” donkey rather than one wearing high heels!

On top of it all, he met his new person this week and will be going to his forever home next weekend.  A very happy ending for a formerly very sad donkey.

It is due to the generosity and kindness of supporters like you that we are able to take animals like Sal in to the rescue, rehab them, and then happily send them off to start a wonderful new phase of their life.

I am hopefully optimistic that with your help we can reach our end of the year goal of raising $35,000. to ensure that we are able to give every animal that comes to the rescue all the help it needs to get started on the next part of their journey.

Separated from his mother. Hog-tied. Penned. This just a glimpse of what happened to to Trey, a 2-month-old foal, during a horrific Bureau of Land Management roundup of wild horses in Utah. Fortunately, Trey made it out — but not all horses are so lucky.

These kinds of roundups occur routinely on our public lands. Wild horses are being harassed, abused, and even killed. But we’re making a difference: by documenting BLM activity, by saving individual horses, by advocating for humane policies like fertility control, and by fighting to stop the BLM’s plan to slaughter these innocent and iconic animals.

AWHC staff were on site when Trey and his mother were captured in a major BLM roundup of 534 wild horses in Utah. The day of the roundup was cold, but many horses were soaked in sweat — a result of stress and exhaustion from a several miles-long helicopter stampede. Once trapped, they began to panic, piling on top of each other while attempting to escape the pen.

Trey and his mother were relentlessly pursued by a helicopter, terrorizing and confusing them. Eventually, the mare was captured, and Trey was left all alone. He was then roped by wranglers on horseback, hogtied and flipped on his side. Despite being far too young to be separated from his mother — two months old at most — Trey was put in a pen with other terrified foals just ripped away from their mothers’ sides.

AWHC tracked Trey to the BLM holding facility and a member of our team adopted him and another orphaned filly from the roundup. They’re now living full lives in their new home. But far too many horses just like Trey — once proud and free — now sit languishing in holding pens, at risk every day of being killed or sold for slaughter. Please help us do more for wild horses like Trey.
