Each year, almost 150,000 American horses – both domestic and wild – are trucked across the border to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. After suffering during long, arduous transport without food, water and rest, these horses meet a horrific and terrifying end. The Safeguard American Food Exports Act (SAFE) will outlaw horse slaughter in the U.S. and prohibit the export of American horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. The livestock industry is working hard to re-establish this cruel and predatory industry in the U.S. and to lift the ban on the sale for slaughter of the nearly 50,000 wild horses and burros stockpiled in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holding facilities.
