U.S. House Committee Takes Steps to Improve Federal Management of Wild Horses
Last weekend, the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations advanced bipartisan language in its Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies funding bill and its accompanying report. This language continues to call for protecting wild horses and burros from slaughter, and includes key reforms to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. These reforms include scaling up humane and proven safe fertility control and – for the first time ever – urging the agency to consider alternatives to helicopters and manned fixed-wing aircraft. AWHC has humane observers in the field at the on-going roundup operations in Nevada that are targeting 3,000 wild horses for removal.
