New Pony Finds Refuge at AAE

LILLY

Meet Lilly! When she was surrendered to a local animal shelter earlier this month, this sweet little pony could hardly walk due to significant pain from her severely overgrown hooves.

After an initial vet examination and starting her on pain meds, shelter staff immediately contacted us for help. The next day, ~10-year old Lilly was on her way to AAE to heal from her past and prepare for her future.

Since her arrival, Lilly has had her overgrown hooves trimmed twice (part of an on-going process), and she is resting comfortably while she awaits more farrier and vet care over the next couple of weeks (e.g. dental, vaccines, deworming and microchip).

Once Lilly’s care and rehab is complete, she will be available for adoption.

‘Tis the Season – Day 10 Amigo

It’s that time of year we share with you the work we’ve all been doing throughout the year. We missed last year while we were in the middle of our Big Move, so we have some catching up to do. The stories you’ll read this month are your donations, volunteering, likes, shares, and other support at work. We hope you enjoy!

AMIGO

Amigo came to AAE with two of his buddies in mid-January 2018 from a neglect situation. He weighed about 850 pounds. As thin as he looks in photos, he was much thinner. His coat was thick with dead undercoat that felt like an old rug hiding his bony skeleton beneath.

Amigo was started on a slow refeeding program consistent with UC Davis’ protocol for rehabilitating starved horses. After about a week at AAE, he had a minor bout of colic. He battled through it like the survivor he is! He was also covered with hundreds of ticks.

We were told he was 29. We were told he was a riding horse, but bucks after a couple hours (at his age, I’m sure he’s saying, enough already!). Other than that, the rest is a mystery. Amigo is very easy to handle, he is very patient with handling his hooves, he thoroughly enjoys grooming and attention, and water/bathing are not an issue.

Though emaciated and starving, this ol’ guy has a heart of gold. He craves attention and simply enjoys being in the presence of humans. He’s a great reminder of how fragile yet resilient horses are, and he holds no grudges for humans, even though he wasn’t treated so kind. Once he gained some weight and stabilize, his teeth were floated, hooves were trimmed, vaccines were updated. he was dewormed, and he got a microchip. He slowly came back to health.

Amigo returned to good health, and he’s in great condition. There could not be a more sweet, kind, lovable old fella! This guy is an absolute gem, and a volunteer favorite. We LOVE this ol’ guy and everything about him.

Amigo is such a great ambassador for horses with AAE’s new volunteers. He’s just a big love! He couldn’t be more easy to handle. He is patient, he’s kind, and he’s one of the most dependable horses at AAE. At 34, this ol’ guy calls AAE home, his last stop.

Thank you for supporting AAE on Giving Tuesday this year!

Because of you, we were able to raise over $13,000 for the horses and exceed our goal! We are humbled by the love you’ve shown for our horses. 

The AAE community is always so supportive and wonderful, but we were blown away by everyone’s generosity yesterday. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! We are grateful to be part of a community who is committed to helping horses-in-need.

Thanks to the support and generosity of our AAE family, you’ve helped turn a challenging year into one filled with hope.

AAE moved to our new home in Pilot Hill. It has been a difficult transition at times and it is still a work in progress. In the coming year, we need to set up more equipment, including a new barn, and cross off a few other to-dos on our list. Nevertheless, we are beyond grateful to be here and are thankful to everyone who helped us make the move. We are excited for what the future holds and all that will be able to accomplish with this larger property.

This year we received an increased number of requests from families who needed to surrender their horses. We always strive to rescue as many as equine as we can, but with the increased requests along with the soaring hay costs and California fuel prices, we unfortunately weren’t able to help everyone who needed it. Thanks to you, we did rescue some equine who had special needs and gave them a second chance for a better life. Horses like Gabby, a retired racehorse who was emaciated and battling chronic issues; Elliott who struggled with urinating freely, and instead, had urine dribbling almost continuously, scalding his skin; old Granger who arrived undernourished, having to fight for food in a herd of eight other much younger horses; and most recently, a pair of donkeys (one in dire need of care) who were abandoned by their person. 

Our goal is to raise $7500 for GivingTuesday, beginning now until next week on November 29, and at least $25,000 this holiday season. We need your help to reach our goal. Tis the season for giving, and any gifts would be greatly appreciated as we move into and through 2023.

Together we can give more horses a second chance for a healthy, happy future and a life of love!

BIG Day of Giving: What Can Your Donation Do?

It’s Finally Here!!  The BIG Day of Giving!!

This event started at midnight and goes for 24 hours. This is a great opportunity to give local now and show the country that our region is #1 as the most generous community on this national day of giving!

This year, our goal is to engage at least 200 donors and raise $10,000 to help us FILL THE BARN to help support our feed and care costs!
