It’s go time again at Chilly Pepper. (Although it seems like that is the norm nowadays.) But we are moving forward and y’all have helped save alot of horses.

YOU are the reason this is all possible and we so appreciate the love and support.

A quick summary of some of the purchases y’all made :)

$ 2,800 for hay
$ 2,500 Foal Lac Powder & Pellets
$ 400 bedding
$ 3,200+ vet bills
$ 250 farrier expenses
$ 750 Colostrum & misc

Those are just some of the major expenses. There are lots of other miscellaneous costs for these kids, but you have made it all possible with your love and support, so Thank You! (At least you know we are not wasting a penny of your much needed donations.)

BRAVEHEART had a very successful, (although expensive) surgery. His bill (not including his gelding) was $950, with the total bill that day for Chilly Pepper coming out to $1250.00 We had his teeth done, his eye removed, he was gelded, had his vaccines and was wormed again, and he is a new man. Both vets concurred with his age only being around 11 when they looked at his teeth. Glad I listened to that little voice in my head that said NO – do not euthanize him. Braveheart made it very clear he was not ready to go anywhere. There was simply no legitimate reason to kill him. He is a very happy and friendly guy and heading to his new home on Wednesdaymorning.

Although it breaks my heart, we have found the perfect home for not only Braveheart, but my beloved Frosty. The vets were amazed when I guided Frosty down the runway. He is extremely smart and would follow voice commands so he avoided hitting his head. (He is completely blind and a wild stallion.) I am so in love with him but can’t keep a horse “just because” when it has a wonderful home available. So I cry like a baby as usual. He was also gelded and had his lil hoofers done, as well as had his vaccines.

Chester, our – hours away from being loaded onto the slaughter truck guy was also gelded, vaccinated and had hoofers done.

But the highlight of that day was having our huge, blind, black stallion safely gelded. Midnight Onyx is ginormous, and nearly jumped out of the 6 foot panels. His back hoofers were about a foot from clearing it. That would have been devastating. He needed a great deal of sedation due to his size, and often times they wake up thrashing and crashing around. Our vet gave him fluids and when he woke up he simply popped to his feet. We definitely had our angels around that day.

We transported 18 horses (mares & foals) for Return to Freedom and Neda was kind enough to make sure we received some compensation for that trip. Woohoo. We so appreciate that.

We want to say THANK YOU to Neda DeMayo and Return to Freedom for sharing their grant from the Coalition for Unwanted Horses. They covered ALL the gelding which came to $1000, leaving the $1250 that Chilly Pepper covered. She is also providing us with some vaccinations for some of the rescued horses. I love working together. It makes us so much more successful.

We seriously need to buy panels for the blind horses to have more room. Our beloved Shadow is also leaving on Wednesday, so we will “only” have 2 blind horses left.

Love’s Legacy is gaining weight and feeling much better. She still cannot eat hay and we need to find her a place where someone has time to give her the special care she needs. She will make a wonderful riding horse, although I wouldn’t put her in a bit. But she is sweet and happy and looking for a new place to land.

STORMY, SAPPHIRE & DIESEL are hanging in there and getting stronger every day. They are still having issues with their tums, but compared to where they were they are doing much better. Please send prayers for their continued improvement. Their is definitely a reason they were not kept by their mama’s.

As always, we appreciate any help with the costs of saving these kids. Unfortunately the type of work we do is the most expensive type as far as the special needs and orphans. But this is where God wants us, so we will rock it the best we can with your help.

Big News: More Horses Coming To Chilly Pepper!

The following is from Chilly Pepper – Miracle Mustang Rescue.

chillychAs I sit here typing, the winds are howling. We have been working in pretty much blizzard conditions, with a wind chill well under 0. It is 3 degrees with the temperature at -20 with the wind chill at this time. More snow is expected in the next few days with even colder temperatures.

At this point Chilly Pepper will have pulled 41 horses, thanks to all the wonderful folks who are helping us save these horses. We are heading out on Friday with the first two trailer loads. With the severity of the weather conditions, we cannot safely sort for the next few days. More snow is expected and it is too icy for sorting. So we will head home and take care of a weather emergency at our own rescue, get the first batch of horses all set up and head back to South Dakota.

While enduring the stress of trying to save as many horses as we possibly can, while fighting through horrific weather, ice underfoot and slipping horses, God sent us another Angel. Because of her generous heart, we are able to bring the above mentioned horses home. Many of them are special needs, with many blind horses in the mix. This is part of what she told us in her email:

I liked what she wrote, so I asked her if I could use it.

Many of the horses we are bringing home are special needs, and all of them would have been first in line to be sent down the “dead end road”… We are hoping we can get some sponsors for some of the blind ones. They deserve a wonderful life and since we already have to have a “blind horse playpen” for Shadow, it seemed like the right thing to do. We also have 12 Stallions, with one of them being blind as a bat, and another with a pretty tough medical issue with his leg. But critical care is what we do, so they are coming home for all the love and care we can provide.

I know so many folks have already donated and we are so blessed to be able to save these horses. However, when an Angel steps up and offers to match up to $10,000, well you can be sure I am putting it out there. God bless and please send prayers for safe travel.

Big Girl Update & Picking Up More Horses!

I met a beautiful little princess yesterday. She has the face of an angel. She lit up my world with the most beautiful smile, all the while I was choking back the tears. (The minute the trailer pulled in the tears started, as I knew Big Girl was leaving. After that, the tears were simply from the joy she was bringing this little girl and the difference she will make in her life.)

Lee is one of the most courageous, wonderful, amazing little girls I have ever met, and her family is just as amazing. She suffered severe burns over her body in a devastating accident, but this little girl is kicking butt, and I absolutely love her. It was an honor and a gift to meet her.

Big Girl came in with no feet, in so much pain she would not even move to her feed, and with the info that if we hit her with a crop when we rode her we might be able to make her trot.

Today she has solid wonderful hoofers. They need a little trim and some shaping, but are good hard supportive feet. She is off her pain meds completely and moves around with ease. Thank You so much for all the love, support and prayers y’all sent. YOU made this happen :)

She now will be Lee’s Therapy Horse. Both of them are loving this and the future looks bright. Lee has to do extremely painful exercises and doing them with and on Big Girl will lessen that pain and it gives her a distraction while healing.

That was our day yesterday, and one of the reasons all this work is worth it…

Today, we spent just shy of $1000 ($970.00) just to get the last 5 horses we brought in laid down by the vet to get their poor lil hoofers done and health certs etc. Happily, all went well and they look like different horses.

Matt and I will be taking 7 horses to their new homes tomorrow and we are so grateful for the wonderful folks we are working with and that these equine are on their way to wonderful lives.

Unfortunately, (or maybe I should say fortunately) tomorrow is also the day we leave to drive back to South Dakota. It is wonderful that we will be able to pick up some more horses, but it is an extremely costly endeavor, especially with the vetting and the hoof work that will no doubt follow. But with colder weather coming we need to get as many as we can while we can. I know it doesn’t seem like we are saving many considering the large numbers, but last year we found homes for 100, a few at a time. So it does help in the long run.

All this is possible because of wonderful people working and networking together. No one could do this alone.

As of now, Karen still has control of the horses and the final verdict will come November 11. If the State takes control (if Karen cannot get the funding she needs to meet the court’s requirements) there could be over 800 horses that need placed before November 30th. This is a serious situation and anyone who might be interested in adopting or helping, please contact Karen at ISPMB to adopt.

We appreciate your love, prayers and any help you can give us. It takes about 20 hours each way and this one will be about 6 or 7 hours longer as we are delivering horses on the way. But while we have the opportunity to get horses safely home before the bad weather sets in, we need to do so immediately. If the weather hits it could mean many horses at risk of “auction” and we all know what that means.
